Henry Schein Unveils Work of Inaugural Pam Joseph Scholarship Fund for Fine Arts Award Winner; Keetae Kim's ``July 18'' Will Be Displayed at Company's New Headquarters as Henry Schein's ARTS Program Rolls Out
MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 2005--Henry Schein, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSIC), the largest distributor of healthcare products and services to office-based practitioners in the combined North American and European markets, unveiled "July 18," a work of art by Keetae Kim, who has been selected as the winner of the inaugural Pam Joseph Scholarship Fund for Fine Arts award. The painting, a 36-by-36 inch acrylic and oil on canvas, was revealed by Henry Schein Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stanley M. Bergman at a recent ceremony attended by the artist. The piece will be displayed in the Company's newly completed global headquarters in Melville, N.Y.
Mr. Kim, a former schoolteacher from South Korea, is an art student at Long Island University's C.W. Post campus, studying under the direction of Mr. Seung Lee, Director of Fine Art and Graduate Studies in the University's Art Department. He was presented with a prize of $3,000 by Mr. Bergman, the first of what will be an annual award to deserving artists in need who work in communities where Henry Schein operates.
"Mr. Kim's extraordinary work will grace our new global headquarters and serve to inspire Team Schein Members for years to come," said Mr. Bergman. "We are pleased to be able to support Keetae's work and help showcase his talent to the public as part of Henry Schein Cares, our global corporate citizenship program. We also look forward to coming years, when his art will be joined by pieces created by other emerging artists who will be recognized as Pam Joseph Scholarship Fund for Fine Arts award winners."
The award won by Mr. Kim honors the contributions of Pamela Joseph, who served on Henry Schein's Board of Directors for 11 years. A noted multimedia artist, Ms. Joseph has received numerous awards and her work has been exhibited across the United States, throughout Europe and in China. She is the director of MaNose Studios based in Aspen, Colo.
In discussing his work, Mr. Kim noted his theme of the fragility of existence. He expressed his interest in contrasting life and death, the lightness of being, and his belief that mortality is what gives life real meaning. He also stressed his great respect for all living things, which he feels are sadly beautiful because they exist despite their weaknesses and limitations.
The Pam Joseph Scholarship Fund for Fine Arts award is the initial facet of Henry Schein's Artist Recognition by Team Schein (ARTS) program. The initiative, which was created to highlight promote the arts and raise awareness of emerging artists among Team Schein Members, will begin at the Company's headquarters and roll out internationally during 2006. Project program elements include a series of art exchanges between various Henry Schein facilities, an intranet site displaying the entire gallery along with biographies of the artists, and possibly additional prints or reproductions of the winning pieces for sale to Team Schein Members.
