Dr. Gangadharan Recognized for His Commitment to Education and Enhancing Animal Welfare in Malaysia

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) announced today that Malaysia's Dr. Gopinathan Gangadharan has received the sixth annual Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award. Dr. Gangadharan was recognized for his role as the longest continuously serving committee member of the Malaysia Small Animal Veterinary Association (MSAVA), and as the coordinator of the Animal Care Project, a nationwide social welfare project designed to improve the awareness of animal welfare and care among the public.

Dr. Gangadharan received the award recently at the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) World Congress 2018 in Singapore. The award recognizes veterinarians who perform exceptional acts of courage or demonstrate a commitment to serve the international community, and is an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company's global corporate social responsibility program.

A 1984 graduate of Madras Veterinary College, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Dr. Gangadharan started his own practice in 1987 and has served as a MSAVA committee member for 22 years. Now in his second term as MSAVA president, Dr. Gangadharan has long been committed to helping train his fellow veterinarians and improving veterinary standards throughout Asia.

In 2010, despite the demands of operating a one-man practice, Dr. Gangadharan created and led the Animal Care Project, a nationwide initiative to encourage responsible pet ownership and raise awareness of overall animal welfare among the Malaysian population. Under this program, many hundreds of dogs and cats were vaccinated, rescued from euthanasia, or adopted out to loving homes. Other animals, including cows, goats, and turtles, received much-needed veterinary care, and dozens of veterinary professionals and other volunteers gave talks about proper animal care.

"This is a great honor, and it is humbling to be recognized for our work on behalf of the animals and veterinary community of Malaysia," said Dr. Gangadharan. "Through our efforts, we have been able to make a tremendous impact on animal health—and by extension public health—in our communities. To Henry Schein and my colleagues at WSAVA, I say thank you."

Dr. Gangadharan was presented with the Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award and a check for $5,000 by Dr. Nigel Nichols, Senior Advisor, International Animal Health GroupAsia Pacific Region, Henry Schein, Inc.

"We at Henry Schein are committed to supporting veterinary professionals who share our belief in the power of education and compassion, and we are so pleased to present Dr. Gangadharan with the Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award," Dr. Nichols said. "His dedication to animal welfare and public health make him the ideal recipient, and we look forward to seeing the long-term impact of his work."

WSAVA World Congress is the flagship annual congress of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, the leading association representing companion animal veterinarians worldwide. Its members include 111 veterinary associations and more than 200,000 individual veterinarians. One of its core activities is the development of WSAVA Global Guidelines in key areas of veterinary practice.
