Henry Schein, Inc. Awards Third Annual Henry Schein Cares Gold Medal to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

02/28/18
Medal Recognizes Organizations That Reflect Company's Commitment to Expanding Access to Care for People and Animals in Need

MELVILLE, N.Y., Feb. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) today announced that the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) has been awarded the gold medal in the Animal Health category of the third annual Henry Schein Cares Medal program.

Henry Schein, Inc. awarded its Henry Schein Cares Medals in the Animal Health category. L-R: Chairman and CEO Stan Bergman, Jennifer Kim Field, Fran Dirksmeier, Karen Prange, and Peter McCarthy of Henry Schein; Bryn Conklin Rogers and Cary Williams of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Gold Medal); Patsy Murphy and Kim Zacharias of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (Silver Medal); and Dr. David Jones and Dr. Jim Hamilton of Brooke USA (Bronze Medal).

The program honors organizations from the fields of oral health, animal health, and medicine that demonstrate excellence in expanding access to care for the underserved. Stanley M. Bergman, Henry Schein's Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, presented the MSPCA with the gold medal at Henry Schein Animal Health's National Sales Meeting earlier this week in New Orleans.

The MSPCA was recognized for its commitment to protecting animals, relieving their suffering, advancing their health and welfare, preventing cruelty, and working for a just and compassionate society. It fulfills this mission by providing direct hands-on care to a wide variety of animals through its Animal Care and Adoption Centers, hospitals, and animal protection programs, low-cost spay/neuter initiatives, and animal behavior classes.

An independent panel of judges selected the MSPCA as this year's gold medalist from a field that also included silver medalist Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (Westbrook, Maine) and bronze medalist Brooke USA, Inc. (Lexington, Kentucky). Each medalist receives a cash award in the following amounts: $15,000 for gold, $10,000 for silver, and $5,000 for bronze, through the support of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. In addition to the cash awards, each medalist will receive $10,000 worth of product from Henry Schein.

"It is an honor to receive this award in recognition of our team's commitment to being a leader in animal protection and veterinary care not just in Massachusetts, but across the U.S. and around the world," said Bryn Conklin Rogers, Assistant Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, MSPCA. "We are humbled to share the stage with our fellow medalists and we thank Henry Schein for recognizing the critical role that organizations like ours play in protecting the animals that need it most. This award will enhance our ability to help develop a just and compassionate society, and we are grateful to Henry Schein and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation for its support."

Founded in 1868, the MSPCA is the second-oldest humane society in the U.S., providing care to thousands of animals a year. The MSPCA also works extensively with pet owners, ensuring that they have the resources and knowledge to care for their pets. The MSPCA's Pet Care Assistance Fund, for example, supports medical care for sick or injured animals whose owners have limited financial resources, while the organization's humane education programs aim to help children develop empathy and a greater understanding of personal responsibility for animals, people, and the environment.

"For 150 years, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been a safe haven for animals that have been abused, neglected, and forgotten, and its staff has demonstrated time and again the transformative power of compassion and care," Mr. Bergman said. "It is my pleasure to award the MSPCA this year's gold medal in recognition of its enduring commitment to the well-being of our society's most vulnerable animals, and for proving that cruelty and indifference are no match for kindness and generosity."

Since its founding in 1932, Henry Schein has been dedicated to fulfilling its responsibilities as a corporate citizen by giving back to the industries and communities it serves. The company created the Henry Schein Cares Medal in 2015 to honor community organizations that shared the company's commitment to serving society and whose work has been especially effective in bringing care to people and animals in need.
