Henry Schein Appoints Dr. Margaret Hamburg to Board of Directors

Hamburg, M.D. to its Board of Directors. Dr. Hamburg has over 15 years of public health experience, holding policy positions in both the Clinton and Reagan administrations, as well as the Giuliani and Dinkins administrations in New York City.

About Dr. Hamburg
Dr. Hamburg held the position of Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, serving as principal policy advisor to Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala from 1997 to 2001. Her responsibilities included policy formulation and analysis, the development and review of regulations and legislation, budget analysis, strategic planning, and the conduct and coordination of policy research and program evaluation.
In addition, Dr. Hamburg served as the Commissioner of Health for the City of New York from 1991 to 1997. In this position, she designed and implemented an internationally recognized tuberculosis control program that produced dramatic declines in tuberculosis cases, developed initiatives that raised childhood immunization rates to record levels, and created the first public health bio-terrorism preparedness program in the nation. Dr. Hamburg was Special Assistant to the Director, and later Assistant Director of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health from 1988-1990. Before that, she was Special Assistant to the Director, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1986-1988.
Born in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Hamburg is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, and currently serves on the Harvard College Board of Overseers. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hamburg has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, the Council of Foreign Relations, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American College of Physicians.
Throughout her career, Dr. Hamburg has received numerous awards and distinctions, and presently is a member of 19 boards and committees dealing with a wide variety of health, security, public policy, and educational issues, with a focus on national policy and response to various emergencies. In addition, she currently is a Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hamburg has 34 publications and four abstracts in a wide range of professional journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet. In addition she has authored many articles for general audiences, which have appeared in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, New York Newsday, and other publications.
