Henry Schein Adds Dr. Louis Sullivan to Board of Directors

Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Brings to the Company Invaluable Corporate Experience and Insights into Needs of Healthcare Practitioners

MELVILLE, N.Y., Apr 15, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq NM: HSIC): the largest provider of healthcare products and services to office-based practitioners in the combined North American and European markets, today announced the addition of Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Sullivan is the former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the founding Dean, Director, and President Emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Having served as Secretary of Health and Human Services under the first Bush Administration from 1989 to 1993, he managed the federal agency responsible for the nation's health, welfare, food and drug safety, medical research, and income security programs. In addition to the Henry Schein Board, Dr. Sullivan currently serves on the Boards of 3M Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, CIGNA Corporation, Georgia-Pacific Corporation, and United Therapeutics Corporation. He also recently retired from the Board of Directors at General Motors Corporation after serving for eight years, and from Household International after nine years.

About Dr. Sullivan

Dr. Sullivan served as Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989 to 1993. He is the founding Dean, Director, and President Emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, and serves on the Board of Directors at 3M Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, CIGNA Corporation, Georgia-Pacific Corporation, and United Therapeutics Corporation. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors at General Motors Corporation and Household International.

Dr. Sullivan played a crucial role in creating the Morehouse School of Medicine. In 1975, he became the founding Dean and Director of the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College. Three years later, the School of Medicine at Morehouse College admitted its first 24 students, when it opened as a two-year program in the basic medical sciences. He served as the first Dean and President when the School of Medicine became independent from Morehouse College in 1981. The School of Medicine was fully accredited as a four-year medical school in April 1985.

Dr. Sullivan returned to the Presidency of the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1993 after serving as the Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Bush Administration. He is currently working to develop a center at the Morehouse School of Medicine to focus on the AIDS epidemic in Africa and to study African-American health issues.

Born in Atlanta, Dr. Sullivan received a Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, from Morehouse College, and earned his medical degree, cum laude, from Boston University. His internship and medical residency were at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He is certified in internal medicine and hematology. His academic appointments include:

  • 1963-1964: Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School
  • 1964-1966: Assistant Professor of Medicine at Seton Hall College of Medicine
  • 1966: Co-director of Hematology at Boston University
  • 1967: Founder of the Boston University Hematology Service at Boston City Hospital
  • 1966-1975: Faculty member at Boston University School of Medicine

Dr. Sullivan was the founding President of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools. He is a former member of the Joint Committee on Health Policy of the Association of American Universities and the National Association of Land Grant Colleges and Universities. He is also a member of the American Medical Association and the National Medical Association.
