Henry Schein Supports Mobile Dental Hospital To Treat Kenyan Refugee Camp Residents

06/13/17
Company Donates More Than $26K in Health Care Products to Support IsraAID's Oral Health Outreach Efforts

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) announced today its commitment to enhance the oral health care of refugees living in Kenya by donating more than $26,000 in oral health care supplies and products to IsraAID, a non-governmental organization dedicated to providing life-saving disaster relief and long-term support in crisis areas around the world. The donation will help equip IsraAID's new mobile dental hospital.

As part of the donation, Henry Schein will donate syringes, gloves, anesthetics, and other supplies to support IsraAID's upcoming dental outreach trip to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, one of the world's largest refugee camps. The donation will provide IsraAID's volunteer oral health professionals with the products they need to deliver high-quality care to the camp's residents, and is an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company's global corporate social responsibility program.

"Refugees face many challenges, and accessing high-quality health care is among the most important to their quality of life," said Yotam Polizer, Co-Chief Executive Officer, IsraAID. "We have seen firsthand the negative overall health outcomes associated with neglected oral care, and we are confident that this new mobile dental hospital will greatly enhance our ability to serve the health needs of Kakuma's residents and other displaced people. We thank Henry Schein for its generosity and its company-wide commitment to supporting the health care needs of refugees around the world."

The mobile hospital is equipped to provide a range of treatments, from screenings to surgical procedures, and to provide oral health education to enhance community members' preventive hygiene practices. In early July, the hospital will visit the Kakuma Refugee Camp, which has housed refugees for more than 25 years, and currently has a population of over 180,000 displaced people. Volunteer dentists from the U.S. and local health care workers are expected to treat approximately 100 to 120 patients per day during the five-day clinic. IsraAID then plans to bring the hospital to other areas of the world where the organization provides humanitarian aid.

"Meeting the basic health care needs of people who have been displaced from their homes and communities can serve as a critical building block to supporting other needs and rights," said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. "We at Henry Schein have consistently demonstrated our commitment to promoting refugee health, and we are pleased to support IsraAID in its efforts to expand access to oral health care for the men, women, and children of Kakuma."
